Catholic Church gives D.C. ultimatum
The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington said Wednesday that it will be unable to continue the social service programs it runs for the District if the city doesn't change a proposed same-sex marriage law, a threat that could affect tens of thousands of people the church helps with adoption, homelessness and health care.
Hang on - didn't Jesus say something about... watchamacallit, helping the poor? I guess it must have been some other guy. |

I think that +Anima may be the cutest thing ever written about suicide and child abuse.
No, really. See, it starts out all, "Look, there are adorable children! Who have the power to turn into animals!"
...And then you learn how they got those powers. |

Currently watching Season One of Jack Bauer and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day... er, 24. It's quite entertaining even if part of my brain keeps providing a continuous running commentary of, "Wait, what? But wouldn't that... and wouldn't he... You can't just... Oh, come on!"
(I overthink things; that's why I don't enjoy action films as much as I probably should. Every time there's a chase scene, I start worrying about whether the owners of the various stalls/storefronts/residences that get smashed up during the festivities have adequate insurance. I mean, we're talking thousands of dollars in property damage here.
...Which is. Probably not the point of the film.) |

My first thought on hearing Angela's full name during the Season 2 finale of Bones: "Her middle name is Pearly Gates? Pearly Gates?"
My second thought: "Of course it is." |

| | amused | ] | - It's kind of a shame that Mayor Wilkins went kerplooey long before AtS season 4, because he and Jasmine would have gotten on like gangbusters. - Speaking of things going kerplooey: So the Judge was supposed to destroy all of humanity, right? Which means that the plot to reassemble him was basically a plot to destroy the vamps' entire food supply.
...Does lacking a soul inhibit the ability to consider long-term consequences? |

| Untitled fic beginning [Aveyond; Lars, Elini, implied Rhen/Lars] |
[Dec. 1st, 2008|01:54 am] |
This fic came about largely because my muse likes to laugh at me.
ME: So, I was thinking of working on the novel. Or maybe doing some RPing. How about it? MUSE: Mmm... nope. You know what you really need to write? Fanfic starring characters from an obscure, poorly-written RPG. ME: ...You don't even listen to a word I say, do you? MUSE: Aw, c'mon. It'll be easy. All you have to do is have Lars be tsundere in Elini's general direction, and the scene will practically write itself. ME: Well...
And the rest, as they say, is history.

I'm not going to talk in any great detail about the obscene number of anti-gay ballot measures that passed last night, because the fact that so many people in this country honestly think that gay-bashing should be written into law makes me want to scream and throw things. That's all that needs to be said, really: It's obscene, it's an affront to human decency, and I hope to hell that the courts strike it down.
But that's not all that happened last night.
One hundred and fifty years ago, slavery was legal. Forty years ago, racial bigotry was legal. And last night?
We elected a black man as president. We elected a black man by an electoral landslide.
That's something to be proud of. |

| | Oh, Internet | ] | So apparently, there's a Gaia RP that slashes Pikachu and Edward Cullen. With bonus songfic!
Pikachu screamed in despair and rotated his arms in an upward direction desprately trying to reach the alabaster hands of his lover. Honey-and-Goldenrod-Wheat orbs slammed into ones unconceived of life. "PIKA! PIKA! KA! (EDWARD! EDWARD! NO!)" he screamed with a slaughtering fury. He could hear the haunting medolic ballad strands of the musical blessing they had first made pleasure to. Celine Dion's symphonic words hurtled through his mind. There were nights of endless pleasure and there were flashes of light, things we'd never do again but at the time seemed so right. Edward Cullen-Pikachu collapsed onto the shaking foliage with a bone-thorttling crunch. His glorious eyes skimmed those of his lover's and he smiled, passing into the oblivion of night, the brilliant sun a cruel testimony. "Aishiteru....Pikachu..."
Hey, I'd ship it. |

Started reading the Twilight series out of morbid curiosity. It's... well, okay, the main romance (pages and pages of goopily romantic ultraviolet prose interspersed with rage-inducing "WHY ARE YOU PEOPLE SO FUCKING RETARDED!?" angst) kinda makes me want to shoot myself. And there are enough typos to make me wonder if Stephanie Meyer's editor read the first three pages and then started chugging grain alcohol. And the gender/sexuality issues require a significant amount of "LA LA LA CAN'T HEEEEEEEAR YOU"-ing. But the remaining two percent of the series is... okay, I guess? It's reasonably entertaining when I'm not distracted by the urge to bitch-slap the characters, and I think that Meyer has the potential to be a good writer if she got (and listened to) a decent editor.
In short: Generally uninspiring, but I can kinda see the appeal. |
